Path to the Cross

It was a bleak dark day
When they lead my blessed Savior away
Down that long dusty road just to hang on a tree
To pay for the sins of you and me.

The soldiers held Him high upon the cross to lift
But He said no man takes my life I give it as a gift
He had been beaten by man and forsaken by God
Yet He prayed for others now isn’t that odd?

They pierced his hands with two rusty nails
Yet he let out no cries He uttered no wails
And those rusty nails were meant for me
But Christ took them and He let me go free.

The blood from His wounds was slowly dripping
And with each precious drop Satan’s power was slipping.
And oh that blood can cleanse the vilest sin
And put your bondage to Satan at an end.

Before they took Him down they thrust a spear in His side
As I read this in my Bible oh sinner I cried
But Jesus strove to remind me for those tears I died
The precious Son of God was crucified.

He then shouted one shout heard by all Heaven’s hosts
Bowed his bleeding head and gave up the ghost
And that one triumphant cry is still ringing in my ear
It’s the good news of Christianity all sinners should hear.

Tetelestai! It is finished! Tetelestai! It is done!
Now through Jesus Christ God and man can be one
They then took His body off that old cross
While the disciples were thinking all is at loss.

They wrapped Him in grave clothes and sealed His tomb
Which the disciples thought would seal their doom
And I know that in Hell the devil and his demons began to yell
We’ve killed him! We’ve won! The devil is king and not God’s Son.

But oh something happened on that third day
Which men have tried to explain away
He arose ! He arose ! From the grave He arose
And defeated Satan and all of our foes.

And I know that it’s true because He lives in my heart
Where he lives out His life never to depart
So if you’ve never experienced His power
He can save you this very hour.

Because He died and rose from that grave
He deserves your life which He wants to save
So dying sinner take hold of that cross
For without a firm hold your life will be lost.

But when you take hold your heart will sing
To the old rugged cross I’m going to cling.
